Man Charged with Aggravated Assault in Accident on Alabama Avenue, SE

The Metropolitan Police Department has announced that the operator of a vehicle which struck a pedestrian and subsequently crashed into a residential dwelling in the 800 block of Alabama Avenue, SE, has been charged with Aggravated Assault. The operator of that vehicle has been identified as 30-year-old Derek Josiah Greene of the 1100 block of Kennebec Street in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

On Saturday, July 5, 2008, at approximately 9:40 pm, a 2003 Nissan Altima was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Wheeler Road, SE, as it approached the intersection with Alabama Avenue, SE. At that point the driver made no apparent attempt to stop for a red traffic signal and continued traveling until the vehicle mounted the curb in the 800 block ofAlabama Avenue, SE, striking a pedestrian on the sidewalk. The vehicle subsequently entered the front yard of a residential dwelling and came to a rest after partially protruding into the residence.

As a result of the impact the pedestrian was trapped beneath the vehicle and had to be subsequently extricated. The unidentified female pedestrian was transported to an area hospital and admitted in critical condition with severe injuries to her lower extremities and body. An elderly resident was reported to have suffered minor injuries while attempting to exit the dwelling.

The operator of the striking vehicle was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the tags displayed on the striking vehicle had been reportedly stolen from Prince George’s County Maryland and that the driver’s operating privileges had been reportedly suspended in the District of Columbia.

It should be noted that the circumstances surrounding this accident remain under investigation by members assigned to the department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit.
