Man Dies in Early Morning Collision

Pedestrian: 26-year old Rodolfo Garcia, 7500 block of Acapulco (Deceased)
Vehicle: 1998 Chevrolet Lumina
Driver: 23-year old Erika Castillo, Lower Valley resident

El Paso, Texas -- The El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigators (S.T.I.) were called to assist Mission Valley Patrol with a single vehicle/pedestrian fatal traffic collision early Saturday morning. Preliminary investigation revealed that Rodolfo Garcia was walking south in the right hand lane of Trowbridge in the 6500 block, when he was struck from behind by a sound bound 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Erika Castillo. The investigation revealed that Castillo drove to a safe location and notified police of the collision. Rodolfo Garcia died at the scene. Investigators believe that speed is not a factor. Castillo has been charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter and booked into the County Jail on a $100,000.00 bond.

This is the 27th traffic death for 2008 as compared to 29 at this time last year and the 6th pedestrian fatality of 2008, compared to 8 for this same time in 07. This is the 12th alcohol related fatality of 2008 as compared to 17 for 2007.
